Sunshine Beach Surf Club

Update; In 2020 the Surf Club received an Australian Institute of Architects Regional Commendation and the State Commercial Architecture Award.

Three and a half years after PUSH and ABA were awarded the design for the new Sunshine Beach Surf Club it’s great to see it finally complete and functioning.

For @paulcurranpush and myself as Surfers (and me also a Clubbie) the Ocean and weather are important parts of our lives and intrinsically informed the design process. We understood the significance of this Public Icon and aspired to create a building that positively contributed to its Community and responded to its unique location and climate. We hope it’s a great venue to enjoy this beautiful stretch of coast Push Architects Pics by Andrew Bock Architecture Architecture

Kailani Beach Houses shortlisted in the 2018 RAIA Architecture Awards

We are very excited and honoured to have the Kailani Beach Houses shortlisted in the Multi Residential category of the RAIA Queensland Architecture Awards.

The project was supported at all times by our wonderful Clients and superbly built by Shadforth Lythgo Builders.

It is a great example that good design doesn't have to cost a lot, with the entire two houses and civil works costing the equivalent of one typical Sunshine Coast beach house. Its also great that the Jury saw fit to award buildings which are simple, low maintenance and relate to their beach house architectural heritage.

The next step will be to see how we go at the Queensland State Awards to be held on Friday the 8th June on the Gold Coast. They are being judged alongside work by six of Australia's best Architects!

Sunshine Beach Surf Club

In late October the design for the new Sunshine Beach Surf Club designed by the collaborative of PUSH and Andrew Bock Architecture was given Planning Approval by the Noosa Council. The design team will now continue with the Design Development and Documentation stages working alongside our Sub-Consultants and Client to finalize the design for Construction. We are very proud to be involved with this landmark project and cant wait to see it onsite.

Shoot the Architect 2015

Just received word that my sneaky selfie shot which includes three other Architect mates has been selected as a finalist for this years "Shoot the Architect" photography competition to be held in Brisbane next month. The occasion was a cooling dip in the oasis of Florence Falls in the middle of the bakingly dry Litchfield National Park in the Northern Territory in November last year. We'd made a quick trip down from Darwin after attending the 2014 Ausindo Tropfest Conference to swim in the crystal clear fresh water beneath the high rocky falls with native fish and fellow dusty travellers.

P.S.  As it turned out the picture won the "Best Creative Portrait" prize. Thanks very much RAIA Queensland for the unexpected Award!

Noosa surf Film Festival

Noosa surf Film Festival

Photography has always been an integral tool of my profession and an essential artistic expression of the way I work and see the world around me. The Noosa Surf Film Festival conducted its inaugural event last weekend over the 23rd and 24th of October and my short surf film "2 Days in May" was selected for screening. I shot the footage over the 2nd and 3rd of May this year and mashed it into a 10 minute movie about the great surfing conditions that dragged in folk from afar.

A very busy start to the year

A very busy start to the year with several exciting new works underway and there appears to be an increased level of activity and optimism in the region. As a result unfortunately I was forced to decline a position on the Sunshine Coast Architectural Awards Jury, something which having done before I was looking forward to being a part of as it's a great way to catch up with my peers and to get a first hand look at some of the regions best Architectural Design. The Awards will be announced in June this year.

Being a visual person I've created an Instagram account to post up items relavant to my work and life here on the Coast. It's a lot less formal than the website plus more dynamic. Check me out @Bockarch or on the Instagram tab.

End of 2013

We've had a steady 2013 with a continuous flow of great work, some of which is ongoing and will be in construction next year, and some will remain on the drawing board a little longer.

We are now however flat out with some very exciting new projects and we will be open over the Christmas - New Year period working through it. We hope that this is a sign of a stable recovery in the overall economy and look forward to next year and what it may bring.

Brisbane Open House Art in Design exhibition 2013

I'm currently preparing a series of new works for the Exhibition that will accompany the Brisbane open house weekend of the 12 and 13 October. My works are entitled "Fabulous Fibro" and are an indulgent exploration of this cheap postwar unassuming construction method which informs a lot of my work.

The works are all 450sq and are oil on canvas and are available to purchase. There will be a limited print run of this particular piece.

ABA office move

Unfortunately our office in Coolum is on the market and forces beyond our control have meant that the successful three year test tube collaboration between myself and Dragi Majstorovic has come to a hopefully temporary end. The relationship was very successful both the both of us and we hope to reinstate it at some point in the near future.

In the meantime Andrew Bock Architecture has now relocated closer to home in Sunshine Beach. The new office is located at Level 1, 20 Duke St Sunshine Beach. It's a great location and space and we are sharing with several other like minded highly talented and creative professionals.

Somewhere in the South Seas....

I've recently been working on a low impact local concept at an undisclosed Pacific location. The emphasis is on regionalism, from the supply of materials, technology and labour to the management of the establishment.

The production has also been low tech with extensive use of the old drawing board, coloured pencils and yellow trace!
